This week, we watch the first full length computer animated movie ever made. Woody And Buzz Lightyear have an epic adventure of tiny proportions in this landmark film that remains entertaining, and even though the technology since its release has improved leaps and bounds, those improvements wouldn’t have been possible without this classic. Toy Story (1995), directed by John Lasseter.
This week, Monty Python’s classic film clops its way onto our screens, coconuts in hand. This low budget comedy stands the test of time and remains one of the funniest films from start to finish ever made, no matter how many times we watch it. Monty Python and The Holy Grail, directed by Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam.
This week, we watch Russell Crowe and Guy Pierce in their first Hollywood roles. Both actors drop their Australian accents for this modern take on the Noir genre. Gone are the hard shadows and silly voices of the genre’s classics, but the numerous locations and plot twists remain. LA Confidential (1997), directed by Curtis Hanson.
This week, we watch the second installment in the Man-With-No-Name Trilogy (sandwiched between A Fist Full of Dollars and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly). This film helped Clint Eastwood further catapult himself into stardom, launch a fully fledged international film industry in Italy, and push the boundary of allowable violence in film a few years ahead all across the world, as evidence by it being X rated even with multiple scenes cut and edited down. This week, we watch the third film in the iconic franchise created by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Harrison Ford embodies the adventurous archaeologist, defeating armies of artifact hungry Nazis with only a leather whip, a pistol, and his trusty hat. Sean Connery cast as Indiana’s father is the best individual decision of the franchise, and John Williams score is as great as the rest of the movie. Fall is here, the season for Halloween and all things horror! We are de-railing from the list once again to prepare for the upcoming It: Chapter 2. We watch the first film this week, which focuses on the younger character story, and brings to screen the same kind of childhood adventure that the film adaptation of Stand By Me captured decades ago, only this time with a murdering clown named Pennywise. It (2017), directed by Andy Muschietti.
This week, Humphrey Bogart plays the bad guy in an American classic. This is one of the first Hollywood films to be shot mostly on location, and the beautiful California and Mexican landscapes justify the record breaking budget. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), directed by John Huston.
Bonus Episode Time! To welcome the film onto Netflix (starting June 26th) and to attempt to give it all the praise it deserves, we watch Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. This movie blows away all recent animated and superhero films alike. It drips originality and brims with jokes, action, and lovable characters. The creators and animators swing for the fences and succeed throughout. Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman.
This week, we watch the film that gave Studio Ghibli their iconic character, who happens to be a giant bunny/bear/owl spirit (with human teeth). While this animated tale might advertise itself as high fantasy, it really spends most of its time with two young girls (sisters) who have to move to the countryside to be closer to their sick mother’s hospital, and the kindness they show each other during their difficult time. Also, there is a enormous 12-legged Catbus. My Neighbor Totoro (1988), directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
This week, we watch the computer animated film who's moral center is that being close minded and unknowledgeable about something can lead to fear and violence, and how being open minded and attempting to learn is the best path to understanding and becoming a good person. Or that its OK for unsupervised kids to feed dangerous creatures food, and only good things will happen if you close your eyes and stick your hand out near their mouths. How To Train Your Dragon (2010), directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders.
This week, we give you a bonus episode! Since Captain America: Civil War episode lined up so perfectly to the same week as the opening of the new Avengers movie, we decided we'd all go to the theater and see what all the fuss is about. VERY SPOILER FILLED EPISODE. See this awesome movie and listen to our take on it. Avengers: Infinity War (2018), directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo.
Written and directed by a Vietnam veteran, this film chronicles the horrifying violence Oliver Stone witnessed during his time in the jungle. A script so anti-war, Hollywood refused to make it, and then awarded it with an Oscar for Best Picture (among others). Makes sense. Platoon (1986), directed by Oliver Stone.
This week, we watch the classic action/thriller that inspired Road Warrior, Duel, Speed, and numerous other vehicle based action films. Four men, in desperate need of money, take on the life-threatening task of driving two trucks full of nitroglycerin across a dangerous mountain pass. The Wages of Fear (1953), directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot.
This week, we watch the animated comedy that tells the tale of a small town bunny moving to Zootopia, a city where all animals can live together without stepping on each other. Also following in Disney tradition, this film introduces a great pop song that you will grow to hate as it plays over and over again in your head. Zootopia, directed by Bryon Howard and Rich Moore.
This week, we watch the unprecedented sequel that pumped blood back into the Max Mad trilogy with a shotgun, the sci-fi/fantasy film that brought an imaginative, cohesive plot to the screen with almost no dialogue, the action movie that received a best picture nomination. With special guest/Mad Max trilogy binger, Tim Brown. WITNESS ME! Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), directed by George Miller.
This week, we watch the block-busting film that paved the way for all buddy movies that came after it. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are a perfect team, as they rob and steal their way across the mid-west. Once a super-posse is assembled to take them down, they attempt an escape to South America. Comedy ensues. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), directed by George Roy Hill.
This week, we watch the rare Stephen King adaptation that omits anything supernatural and simply focuses on the characters. Rare also in that it's a film adaptation of one of his books and it isn't terrible. Four kids take a two day trip down the railroad track in search of the body of a dead classmate, and stellar child acting ensues.Stand By Me (1986), directed by Rob Reiner.
This week, we watch the classic fairy tale where Wesley and Buttercup set out on adventure against two warring kingdoms for true love. Pirates, death machines, murder, revenge, monsters...all in a light hearted tone, and surrounded with universal comedy. The Princess Bride (1987), directed by Rob Reiner.
